The Best Restaurants in Cincinnati: Where I Ate for My 42nd Birthday

Sep 23
4 min read

When I got back to Ohio for my actual birthday this year, I didn't want a big production, I just wanted good food with my people. So instead of a bunch of birthday activities, I went looking for the best restaurants in Cincinnati and landed on two standouts, one downtown Cincinnati restaurant and one in Hyde Park.

Court Street Kitchen — Downtown Cincinnati

Court Street Kitchen sits right in the Central Business District at 7 E Court St, and it's one of the most talked-about downtown Cincinnati restaurants right now. The vibe is upbeat and modern, low light, cool colors, mid-century design — the kind of place that works for a power lunch, a date night, or a bigger group celebration like mine.

What People Are Saying

This place has a 4.7+ rating across hundreds of reviews and has been named one of Yelp's best new restaurants in the country. Diners consistently point to dishes like the seared branzino and the NY strip as standouts, with servers getting called out for fabulous service alongside dishes like the fresh oysters and mushroom ragout.

What I Got

My go-to here is the Seared Salmon — sweet onion and roasted red pepper couscous, asparagus tips, all finished with a lemon cream sauce. It's so lemony and so good, I order it every single time. For my birthday I also treated myself to the Olive Oil Cake for dessert — lemon cream icing, raspberry sauce. It's a must-have, hands down.

Al-Posto — One of the Best Hyde Park Cincinnati Restaurants

Al-Posto is tucked into Hyde Park Square at 2710 Erie Ave, and it's easily one of the restaurants Hyde Park Cincinnati locals keep coming back to. The name says it all — "al posto" means "at the spot" in Italian, and that's exactly the energy: a full-service Cincinnati Italian restaurant and wine bar where you meet your people. This is where I actually had my birthday dinner, and even with a party of 11, the staff moved us to a bigger table without missing a beat.

What People Are Saying

Al-Posto holds one of the highest ratings in Hyde Park, and reviewers consistently mention the house made pasta, which isn't buried under heavy sauces, letting it actually shine. One recent diner said the staff made their birthday dinner special, with the tableside cacio e pepe demonstration standing out as a highlight, which tracks with my own experience there.

What I Got

I started with the Smoked Oyster Caesar — I'll be getting this every single time I go back. For my main, I went with the Cacio for Two, spaghetti with black pepper and Pecorino Toscano, made tableside in a Parmigiano wheel, and added shrimp. Honestly, the dish wasn't my favorite, but the tableside experience of it was worth it on its own. I stole a few bites from my friends' plates too — the Pollo Piccata and the Branzino were both top tier. I never made it to the Eggplant Parmigiana Classica because I was too stuffed, but my friends couldn't stop raving about it. I did save room for a scoop of Gelato — vanilla, but it had this caramel note to it that I was not expecting and loved.

  • The tableside cacio e pepe show — steam, cheese wheel, and all. This is the experience everyone talk
  • Cheers-ing to 42 — this one's for the books.
  • A single candle, one scoop of gelato that tasted way more caramel than vanilla, and the sweetest way

Where to Stay in Cincinnati

These two spots are in different parts of the city, about a 10–15 minute drive apart, so where you stay depends on which side of town you want as your home base.

Downtown pick: Moxy Cincinnati Downtown — 312 Main Street. Playful, historic-meets-modern, and walking distance from Court Street Kitchen.

Hyde Park pick: Residence Inn by Marriott Cincinnati Midtown/Rookwood — 3815 Edwards Road. About a 14-minute walk to Hyde Park Square, rated 9.2/10, with full kitchens in the suites and a lobby fireplace if you're staying more than a night or two.

If you're still deciding where to eat in Cincinnati on your next trip, honestly, either of these two is worth building a whole visit around.
